There was a lot of fanfare today from the White House over an announced Chinese order for 200 Boeing aircraft but The Seattle Times is reporting that the announcement is a little misleading since the 200 aircraft order for Boeing 737s and 777s announced today were actually ordered a while back.
While Chinese President Hu did make the deal official today, the orders had actually been placed over the last three years.
The article suggests that the announcement was intended to show a greater commitment by the Chinese government toward buying American exports.
While it is certainly important for Boeing to make inroads in the world’s largest nation and demand is expected to skyrocket in China over the next twenty years, to say that China placed an order for 200 Boeing aircraft should be kept in perspective.
Boeing’s order backlog did not change today since the orders were already in the log.
