LaHood Blames ‘Human Error’ for JFK Collision

Ray LaHood took to the news networks on Sunday in an effort to reassure Americans that the FAA is taking recent issues regarding air traffic controllers falling asleep on the job seriously.

But he also used his air time to address the incident at New York’s JFK International Airport and point the blame at “human error” according to the New York Daily News. LaHood did not specify which human exactly, the pilot of the Air France A380, the pilot of the Comair Bombardier CRJ-700, or the air traffic controllers at JFK.

It seems that LaHood is stating the obvious here since some person must be at fault for the incident since airplanes don’t use auto pilot to taxi and it doesn’t appear that there was some kind of mechanical issue that caused the A380 to smash the back of the CRJ-700.

This has led to a third possible explanation by some experts: Maybe the plane is just too big for toady’s facilities?

Certainly JFK is capable of handling the A380 since its runways are big enough and its gates are capable of handling the plane, but it’s possible that as airports become more congested and planes get bigger, that these incidents are to occur more frequently since there just isn’t enough space to properly manage all of the traffic.

This isn’t to say that pilots and air traffic controllers shouldn’t be held responsible for careless oversight when planes are taxiing around the airport, but seeing how easily the A380 clips the CRJ-700 does makes you wonder if such incidents might happen more frequently as airports get busier and busier.
