Ancient martial arts in the workplace would typically fall under the category of things that are NSFW but at Hong Kong Airlines, cabin crew members are quickly becoming experts in the ways of kung fu. French news service AFP reports (via Montreal Gazette) that the airline is requiring cabin crew members to take kung fu lessons in order to “better deal with drunk and unruly passenger.”
Already, the training has come in quite handy for the airline which sees about three incidents per week of disruptive passengers.
Two weeks ago a crew member had to put her martial arts training into practice on a flight from Beijing to Hong Kong.
“One of the passengers was sick but he was probably drunk and felt unwell. The crew member attended to him and she realized her fitness was helping her, especially because the guy was quite heavy,” Chan told the newspaper.
“Normally, a female cabin crew can’t handle a fat guy, especially if he’s drunk, but because of the training, she can handle it quite easily.”
The particular type of kung fu being used in called wing chun and is ideal for confrontations in closed spaces such as those on an airplane.
Now word yet on whether other airlines are looking into kung fu training for their cabin crews.
